Looking for a Manager/A&R?
By Sarah Sokal
In my years in the industry, I've encountered numerous young artists eager to kickstart their music careers, brimming with talent and hope, often asking, "Do you know a manager?" At this crucial stage, many feel the need for someone who can invest in their career, offering invaluable experience and guidance.
What these aspiring artists crave most is direction towards success and someone to navigate decisions for them—a notion often glamorized by media portrayals. Many of the artists we admire in the mainstream music sphere have dedicated management teams behind them. What these artists may overlook is the importance of honing their songwriting skills and building their personal brand.
If you aspire to a larger-than-life career like your idols, you must prove your appeal to the public and demonstrate revenue potential to attract support. This necessitates numerous public engagements, including performances across various cities or states.
What You Need
Above all, you need a polished product—well-written, well-produced, and mastered with a distinct sound. Craft a compelling narrative and create standout artwork. Remember, your debut album defines you not just as an artist, but as a person; authenticity resonates deeply with audiences today.
In an era dominated by AI-filtered perfection on social media, authenticity stands out. Managers and A&R professionals are not interested solely in your initial email. Serious industry players won't engage unless you've already achieved some level of success. Beware of scammers; don't waste precious time on superficialities.
Even with a completed project—an original album and a band—there's no guarantee managers or executives will invest without a significant following. They view potential signings as rare opportunities for substantial returns.
Be an Entrepreneur
Before investing in building a team, ask yourself: Have I defined my musical identity? Don't compromise your artistic integrity for visibility. Music is a business, but it's also a passion for many. If you view music as a growth opportunity, consider managing your career independently.
Not every artist is an entrepreneur, but workshops on entrepreneurship and basic accounting can empower you to manage and plan effectively. Understanding the business side prepares you for mainstream success without relying solely on others' advice.
Embrace the Journey
For young and seasoned artists alike, managing your own business can lead to invaluable wisdom, despite inevitable challenges. Before seeking a savior, believe in yourself as the captain of your journey. It takes talent and courage to pursue an artistic life.
Amidst companionship, artists often navigate their journeys alone. Cherish moments of solitude, embrace the breeze, and savor the freedom. Enjoy the journey, for time is our most precious asset.
